Neighborhood and Position Effects Interact in Naming Latency

چکیده

Naming latency studies have recently shown a position-ofirregularity effect (words with early irregularities seem slowed compared to those with late irregularities), for which DualRoute models of reading can account. Milostan & Cottrell (1998) showed that the initial studies contained a confound between irregularity position and friend/enemy ratio, and that the statistical confound could be captured by connectionist networks which then show the supposed position effect. This paper presents work to disentangle the position/regularity confound through a subject study and additional connectionist explorations. The latency data show that, once friend/enemy ratios are controlled for, the supposed position effect is driven entirely by high-enemy words in the first position. Further, connectionist network simulations show that network error at the first phoneme position only is a better match for naming latency, while overall network error produces a better match to subject error counts.

Lexical Access in Persian Speaking Children With and Without Specific Language Impairment

Introduction: Word retrieval problems are among the limitations observed in children with specific language impairment during the initial schooling years. These restrictions are predictive of reading problems and poor performance at school. Additionally, studies on lexical access in Persian speaking children are scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate and compare naming accuracy and ...

Exploring orthographic neighborhood size effects in a computational model of Chinese character naming.

Orthographic neighborhood (N) size effects have been extensively studied in English consistently producing a facilitatory effect in word naming tasks. In contrast, several recent studies on Chinese character naming have demonstrated an inhibitory effect of neighborhood size. Response latencies tend to be inhibited by inconsistent characters with large neighborhoods relative to small neighborhoo...

Effects of word frequency and phonological neighborhood characteristics on confrontation naming in children who stutter and normally fluent peers.

UNLABELLED In a prior study (Newman & Bernstein Ratner, 2007), we examined the effects of word frequency and phonological neighborhood characteristics on confrontation naming latency, accuracy and fluency in adults who stutter and typically fluent speakers. A small difference in accuracy favoring fluent adults was noted, but no other patterns differentiated fluent speaker responses from those o...

Phonological Neighborhood Density in Native and Non-Native Word Production

The role of phonological neighborhood density in lexical access was examined during nativeand nonnative language production. German-English and English-German bilinguals named pictures of German words with highand low-density neighborhoods. Results revealed that accuracy of picture naming was influenced by phonological neighborhood, with high-density neighborhoods facilitating lexical access in...

Picture Naming in Children With and Without Specific Language Impairment: An Error Analysis Study

Objectives: The lexical-level deficits are one of the hallmark limitations observed in early school-age children with specific language impairment. These problems are the predictors of reading problems and poor performance at school. Most studies in Persian-speaker children with specific language impairment have focused on syntax and morphology and the naming errors profile of these children ar...
